The City Council of Estepona reports that public green areas in the city have exceeded 800,000 square meters, representing an increase of 60 percent since 2012. The Mayor, José María García Urbano, has said that in the last seven years, through the municipal project ‘Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol’, has worked hard to provide the urban area and the outskirts of new parks and gardens to the municipality, going from 498,224 square meters registered seven years ago to 800,891 square meters today.
With these figures, the city continues to double the national average of square meters of green areas per inhabitant established by the Land Law.
The councilor has indicated that, among the new green spaces that have been generated in recent years, it is worth highlighting those that have been created in different parts of the outskirts. Thus, the construction of a 20,000 square meter park in the Bel-Air area has recently been completed, to which must be added the 10,000 square meters of green areas next to La Resinera and Las Joyas, the 13,000 square meter green meadow which was built at the access to Cancelada and which includes a skate court, and a second 26,000 square meter green area also in Cancelada where there is the football pitch and a recreation area with bio-healthy circuits.
The provision of new green areas on the outskirts includes the recent creation of a park of 25,000 square meters next to the Hospital Estepona and a green meadow of 5,000 square meters in the east access of the municipality (uphill road to Benahavis). In the case of the gardens located next to the sanitary equipment, the alderman has commented that a park has been designed in three heights connected with pedestrian paths. In addition, this green area has a multi-sports court to practice sports such as handball, indoor football or basketball and semi-forestry vegetation according to that predominates in the environment.
With regard to the new green areas of the town, Garcia Urbano has highlighted the expansion of the Children’s Park which was completed this May and allows the city to have a recreation area of 38,000 square meters.
The performances have continued in the town with the performance carried out in the Angel beach, which have created an open-air museum dedicated to the sculptor Santiago de Santiago in a park of 10,000 square meters, the canine park of La Cala of 1,000 square meters and the new green spaces that add up to more than 9,000 square meters in the area of La Lobilla, among others.
To this must be added the commitment to the environment that is being done in the remodeling of the old town with the installation of thousands of pots and plants in its streets and the tree plan by which more than 8,000 copies have been planted throughout the municipality in recent years.
García Urbano has insisted that the model of city that wants to do in Estepona respects the environment and the quality of life of neighbors. In this regard, he recalled that the Consistory also recently approved an ordinance that applies very restrictive criteria to prevent third parties from cutting and pruning specimens in spaces of urban development, so that prevails the preservation and respect for trees.
